Title: Wake questions, and the effective use thereof
Post by: NecroticAgenda on June 20, 2015, 03:40:03 PM
So how exactly does the Wake feat work? Do you have to move 3 times per round to get off all of its damage, or 2? What are your favorite combos with Wake?

I believe you only have to do two movements, but the first 5 feet each round don't count. At higher levels, the free forced  movement is more useful then the easily negated damage.

I like wake on characters which are already highly mobile. Swashbucklers, knights, and vigilante stand out for that. Utter brute is also subtly good with it, due to their 5ft of unstoppable movement.  As grue says, the forced movement can be the best part later on, so its good to combo with things that are nasty to push enemies into. an elementalists wall, sirrico, or other persistent areas of damage, or use it to line up enemies to get hit with another ability. Its not the best forced movement, but it is pretty reliable. It can also be good for pushing opponents away from allies, which can break grapples, or let you put yourself in between them, or pull them out of a strategic location. For instance, a couple of wakes can pull someone out of a doorway and move them to the side.
Another combo is .. ghoul. The physical vulnerability makes the KOM damage into KOM+level damage, a much more potent danger that can even punch through a resistance. a deft strike can also help it punch through resistances, and between the two it can pierce greater resistance. DR may still stop it at that point, though.
It is also nice on a water elemental. Their extra 5ft step helps trigger it, and its an excellent way to use hungry ocean; hitting a fresh enemy with it will deal 2xlevel damage rather than KOM damage, which is one of the most ideal places to trigger hungry ocean.
