Title: INFORMAL CONTEST: Make A Weapon!
Post by: Captnq on January 05, 2013, 12:58:01 AM
Hey, Let's pass the time in a fashion that I trick you into doing my work for me! Let's have a contest!

The "CAUSE WE'VE GOT TO PASS THE TIME SOME HOW" department proudly presents, the first MinMax in Exile Contest:

MAKE A WEAPON!

Having just thrown up a rought draft of my Weapon Special Ability handbook HERE (http://www.ruleofcool.com/smf/index.php/topic,669.0.html), I've been trying to think up some cool weapons. So, lets have some fun with it.

Rules are:
1. Using the Handbook's Weapon Special Abilties (check the end of the handbook for the Downloadable PDF for the my work notes on the WSAs themselves.) and any other published WotC source (3.0 or 3.5) make a weapon. Any weapon, material, or feat/spell combo is open to you, but note, the more your weapon depends on something else other then it's own powers, the less likely it is going to win. This is a contest about weapons, not a PrC who uses weapons.
2. You cannot make the same weapon bonus twice. So, one +1, one +2, one +3, etc etc etc. So a max of 10 weapons you can submit.
3. Judging is by everyone and is based on sheer kick-assery, coolness, and cost effectivness. You post replies and make comments about why a given weapon sucks or is great.
4. Posting and Judging ends when MinMax comes back.
5. Round 2 involves me making a Poll Thread and asking people to vote. All weapons that make it to Minmax will be put in the next draft of The WSA handbook, but only one, The winner, will be declared...

THE AWESOME WEAPON OF AWESOMENESS

High End ... PsyWar 2 with the Soulbound Weapon acf
tacked onto a super high CL build 18 , and
a Psiotheurgist feat to get those CLs over to the power,
would be a set of +1 (or +0) magic weapons,
with CL/5 weapon plusses to choose in whatever fashion.

Little Friend

Made by Tony the Scarmage, little friend has been recreated by others in scaled down versions, but Little Friend remains the gold standard for BFGs.

Little Friend (Total: +10)
GP: 200,800 gp
Damage: (3d8 P/ 3d8 B) x 2
Range: 1,000 ft
Max Crew Size: 2
Weight: N/A (400 lbs)
+1 Flying (+1), Quick Loading (+1), Self Loading (+2), Splitting (+3), Starburst (+2) Light Ballista

When the scarmage wanted a huge ranged weapon, he went with the light ballista. He would have used the heavy, except that the heavy must be mounted, and the light can still be mobile. So he could bring it around with him, he made it flying. It can attack on it's own, and does not suffer the -4 to hit penalty when it does, as it is assumed to be skilled at firing itself, but since it has no feats, it cannot use the splitting WA when it is shooting itself. Also, it's an animated object, so it's BAB is lousy. Normally, it floats by it's owners side and waits to be fired. Unless the owner can carry 400 lbs, the user is limited to 30 feet of movement, or has to leave Little Friend behind and wait for it to catch up.

Quick loading and Self-loading get the load time down to one move action. Starburst turns it into an area of effect weapon that does 3d8 piercing and 3d8 bludgeoning damage in a 20 radius of the point of impact for a reflex save of 15. Alas, starburst does not allow you to hit someone with the bolt directly anymore. Finally, splitting turns it into two seperate attacks, basically doubling the damage.

In theory, it is possible to have someone else handle the move action to reload. This could allow the user to fire twice in a round, assuming his BAB is at least a 6.

"Say hello to my little friend!"

(fluff)

Was there ever a Prismatic Sword type thing?
I ask because I've homegame assumed it, in multiple editions.
Sword rolls d8 like Pris Spray, but an 8 gets the Blinding effect.
Obviously weaker than the spell, still kinda nifty.

Perhaps Prismatic Burst would do for you ADMG?  MiC 40

Blastspike (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhSs_6Hya_c)
Large +1 keen/+1 deadly precision (MIC p32) heavy (MoF p179) kaortic (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031014a) Parthian rapier (RCS p56)

Wielding this weapon requires Powerful Build or Strongarm Bracers, MWP (rapier), EWP (heavy weapon), EWP (kaortic weapon), EWP (firearms) and EWP (Parthian rapier), which basically requires a level in Exoticist (sneak attack?) fighter or Master of Masks.

The result is a one-handed weapon that deals 2d6 15-20/x4 base damage (but cannot be finessed). As a free action on hit, you may fire the pistol built into the blade, making an attack that deals 3d6 20/x4 base damage, ignores Dex bonuses to AC, and adds +1d6 to your existing sneak attack damage. The pistol requires a standard action to reload (or a move action if your DM lets you extend Rapid Reload to it; a ghostly reloadRotD spell would be better yet, and could be added to a wand chamber).

Banhammer

Banhammer (Total: +7)
GP: 98,400
Damage: (1d8 B) x3
Weight: (8 lbs.)
Flaming (+1), Acidic (+1), Flaming Burst (+2), Acidic Burst (+2)

This +1 Starmetal Warhammer was designed by the Moderators, an order of Clerics dedicated to neutrality. To this end, they created a weapon capable of banishing agents of the extreme alignments- Demons, Angels, Azata, and Devils. The Banhammer, when striking one of these creatures, casts Banishment in order to send them back to their home planes. However, the base of the Moderators was the forum of a long abandoned city in a mountain pass that was home to many trolls- which meant they needed a weapon to defend themselves. Having blown most of their budget and experience points creating the Banishment enchantment, they decided to just add a few powers to the Banhammer. Upon command, this hammer can burst into flames and acid, overcoming the healing powers of the trolls. Due to its nature, only those whose alignment is some variant of neutral can wield it properly.

You know, I've made a weapon, but I want to try making something actually new. SO HERE WE GO.

Step one: Decanter of Endless Water, Bottle of Infinite Sand

Step two: pipe system- such that the decanter can be fed into the back, and the Bottle mounted on the underside. Optional bayonet.

Step three: Bag of tricks (Rust or Tan), and a breach-loading mechanism composed of a bit of pipe that is open at the top.

This weapon relies on the rules for shapeshifting stating that something will not grow or return to its normal size unless it has sufficient space. Load the fuzzy ball from the bag into the top, speak the Decanter's command word for "Geyser," and hold on tight as the ball launches and becomes a fully grown, angry animal- with all the momentum of a cotton ball flung out of Old Faithful. And should you use up your allowance of 10 animals for the week, you can speak the command word for the bottle of sand's sandblast feature. Now here's the beauty- make the command word contain the one for the decanter. Say, "Shahb" for the decanter, and "Shahbadoobi" for the sand. You now have a sandblast and geyser shot active at the same time- and the sandblast ignores hardness.

The only question is what to call it.

The Loom

+1 Distance Splitting Exit Wounds Harpoon (+6 equivalent) with a Weapon Crystal of Return

Each attack splits into three harpoons, each of which can hit two adjacent guys and impale them (presumably sticking them together) if they fail a Reflex save (which is based on the damage). This reduces their movement speed to half.

Depending on how the DM interprets these weapon properties interacting with the Harpoon, some or all of them may take the same damage again at the end of the round as the weapon flies back through the air into your hand. Alternatively, maybe they're all strung together like a bunch of fish on a stringer.   ;D

Normally you can't have a splitting harpoon... But I like the idea of one :)

Why? Is it specifically ranged only (not including thrown)?

No, but it's limited to bows, crossbows, arrows, and bolts, although it seems silly not to let it apply to thrown weapons as well.

Two More, meant to be used together:

+1 Superior Agility, Deflecting (+1), Eager (+1) Wakizashi
Cost: 27,300

+1 Deflecting (+1), Parrying (+2) Focus Katana
Cost: 10,060

Combining these two for someone who has two weapon fighting style, we have a a light weapon for the off hand that can be drawn as a free action. You can make a Iaijutsu focus roll to draw the katana, so no need to be reduntant with the Eager WSA.

We have a total +7 to reflex saves, which is the save you make when deflecting arrows. BTW, you can deflect two arrows a round.

So, we have your classic oriental two weapon fighting style weapons with superior initiative, superior damage during the first round, and you can knock two arrows out of the air every round, a 1st level fighting having a minimum of 50% chance of success. Or you can make two attempts on one arrow, making it a 75% chance of success.

These count as my +3 and +4 entries.

+5 Defending(+1), Smoking (+1) Defensive Surge (+1), Displacement/+5 Defending (+1) Duststorm (+3) Quarterstaff
Cost: 362,600 gp

The ultimate in not-being hit weapondry.

You use defending to reduce the +5 in both ends of the quarterstaff to 0, giving you a total +10 to AC. The defensive surge sucks, but when activated will give you another +2 to AC when fighting defensively. Smoking gives you a 20% miss chance, and duststorm/haboob gives you a 50% miss chance that doesn't stack with smoking, but haboob doesn't work when they are closer then 5 feet away, smoking plugs up that hole in the middle. Plus smoking and haboob are AoE attacks. Displacement only lasts for 15 rounds, but it's an illusionary 50% miss chance that stacks with Haboob/Smoking.

And it's a frickin' stick. Who's going to take away an old man's walking stick?

This is my +9 and +8 entry

+1 Whirling (+1), Shadowstrike Spiked Chain
Cost: 9,325 gp

For the would-be sneak attacker. For one time a day, you can deny your enemy his Dex bonus to armor class, which qualifies him for sneak attack damage. Since it is one attack, you can apply whirling to make that same attack to everyone in your threat range. Which thanks to spiked chain and shadowstrike is now 15 feet. Ask your wizard for an enlarge person to increase your threat range to 25 feet. Pretend to be an Anime Character.

This is my +2 weapon entry.

+1 Balance, Blurring, Jumping, Vanishing Sleeve Blade
Cost: 63,654 gp

The most expensive +1 weapon you will ever own.

It gives you a +30 to jump and a +8 to balance, so you can do that running across roof tops things. Its got blurring so you are harder to hit, and to make it harder to see through your disguise. And it's got vanishing, so you can stab someone then dimension door 60 feet back up to the roof tops. Finally, its in a sleeve blade, so you have it wielded, but it doesn't take up one of your hands. Note, you cannot use anything else in the forearm slot while using a sleeve blade. Now you can truly exclaim, "I'm Batman!"

This is my +1 entry

Soulknife 6 with the +2 and +4 levels to your Knife feats.
(I'd have to find carnivore's last posts on this in mmx)
Takes Mindfeeder.
Ignore the SRD + MIC nerf of the Soulknife mindfeeder,
because the errata doc is referring to the "weapon" mod,
not the Soulknife class ability.
Bag-o-Rats ... (see it ain't the Soulknife's fault)
UrPriest 9 or whatever, might need a qualifying help dip
Cerebremetamagic feat from Dr#349
Roughing it, I think every feat slot is taken.

Combo goes Soulknife + Mindfeeder not nerf + Bag-O-Rats = recharge
recharge + the Cereb feat = semi-unlimited metamagic on UrP goodies.
Could start stacking in Ardent 2 / PT 7+ / Monk 2 w Tash, etc.
Theme:  "Nobody ever says the Soulknife is Overpowered, eh ?!"

More discussion on the PsyWar acf ---> http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:TL8u_0fpwxgJ:brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php%3Faction%3Dprintpage%3Btopic%3D8011.0+site:brilliantgameologists.com+psywar+acf&cd=7&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a

Monk 2 / PsyWar 2 / whatever 7 / Titan Bloodline 3
exp hinkyness ... so the 12th level ability kicks in.

Flurry with Huge Siege Weapon.  I have no idea what this does.
Can put regular weapon mods on the Siege Weapon.
Could you imagine Bethany Hamilton whipping out a petrified version of the Shark that bit her ?!

A seeking net with the trailing rope tied to the trailing rope of a dancing harpoon.  This is my casual non-entry, feel free to improve upon/etc.

Oh and have a bunch of these so you can do your net folding after combat.

Maybe returning could be fun...

Once upon a time, I statted out an Animated Object
that could wield Thor's Hammer.  iirc - it has to
be Gargantuan and needs an STR belt item, and
Thor's gauntlets, to do it.  Wheels for movement.
Maybe it's a statue.

( doing things backwards )
