Battle Frigate Freya (Now Live!)
« on: May 16, 2012, 02:17:20 PM »
The Alliance of Spacefaring Civilizations is at war! Under attack from numerous powerful enemies such as the Corsair, the T'resh and the Praxan Empire, the Alliance has pinned its hopes on a new super prototype, developed at a secretive space station.

This prototype is the Battle Frigate Freya, a mid-size ship that combines the durability and firepower of a large cruiser with the speed and maneuverbility of a stuntfighter. Armed with the latest technology and intended to be a vanguard craft in strikes on enemy targets, the Freya is the Alliance's best chance of survival.

Unfortunately, enemy spies have secured tracking devices on the Freya, which feed its telemetry (though not its position) to the three hostile factions. Further, the Freya's escort has been destroyed in a sudden strike on the station. Though the craft itself has escaped, it must now return to Alliance territory alone, crossing unstable and uncertain areas of space while alien forces hunt her down.

One player will take on the role of captaining the Freya, while everyone else takes on the role of either supporting Alliance forces out to find and rescue the Freya, or else Corsair, T'resh and Praxans seeking to terminate the Alliance's super prototype before it can change the course of the war. The player captaining Battle Frigate Freya must be consistent, for the actions of the Freya will set the pace of the game.

Post here with your interest; when a captain for Battle Frigate Freya has been chosen, the game will begin!

Hm, possible interest with more details on the praxan/ t'resh. Or is that our job to come with their background?

I'll construct some gameplay elements for the enemy forces, but in terms of flavor, players will be invited to Go Nuts.

I'm interested, though I don't have a strong preference on what role I play.

I will take the helm if no one else is willing. To steer us out of the maw of hell is my task and tis a dirty one at that, but someone's got to do it. Would like a tactical report on the T'resh, Corsairs, and Praxan Empire. Our enemies are after us and we're flying blind. I like to know what I'm up against.

I'd like to join as well as one of the chasers, as Geigan seems to be the capable captain here.

Edit: Right! Faction! I will choose the T'resh.

I will take on leadership of the mighty Corsairs, a pirate fleet that loves trolling and hates eldritch abominations.

The games will begin shortly. Geigan will be the captain of the Battle Frigate Freya. Its success or failure is on his head.

Let us discuss the rules of the game:

Whenever Battle Frigate Freya takes a turn, each other player receives a turn. Battle Frigate Freya does not need to wait more than an hour for you to take your turns, but would be wise to since if you bank them all you can storm her at once and that would be Very Bad For The Pilot.

The pilot of the Freya has full intelligence on the ships available to each faction, though not their numbers or positions. The Freya has reverse-engineered the telemetry trace hijacking her systems and can read the movements, though not the positions, of all other vessels. Yes, this is a fluff excuse to justify the transparency of PbP. Each faction will have vessels with a credit value of 25, 50, 75, 100, 250 and 400, save the Corsairs with a special 10 credit vessel in place of the 400.

Space is laid out in a grid of Space Sectors. Unless otherwise specified, all radii in Space Sectors (#SS) are actually square areas, because I am very lazy. Movement, unless specifically indicated otherwise by your vessel, is in straight lines. Superlight speeds can be accomplished with your warp drive, in which case they are specified in #SS and propel you from sector to sector, while sublight speed is impulse, will not move you out of the sector you currently occupy, and is required for turns of 90 degrees. Impulse speed does allow you to enter the sector of another vessel, denying them evasion, and is also required to employ your own evasion. If you're really feeling up to it, you can even call for a full stop. Doing so lets you rotate 180 degrees for your next turn and is also harder for pursuing ships to catch on to. You cannot call a full stop from 4SS or higher, you must first lower your speed. Some very few ships have a hyperdrive, a powerful engine that lets them fold space and move instantly to another point without passing through the intervening space.

To recap:

Full Stop - 180 degree rotation allowed, relative position not announced to a pursuing vessel
Impulse - 90 degree rotation allowed, allows evasion/denies evasion, can move inside another ship's sector
Warp Drive
   • 1SS/Warp 1 displaces you one space sector in a straight line
   • 2SS/Warp 2 displaces you two " " " " " "
   • 3SS/Warp 3 " " three " "
   • 4SS/Warp 4 displaces you two space sectors in a straight line and requires you to slow before calling a full stop
   • 5SS/Warp 5 displaces you two space sectors in a straight line and requires you to slow before dropping to impulse
   • 6SS/Warp 6 etc.
Hyperdrive - Instant point-to-point transmission at the speed specified; cannot exceed engine's maximum speed rating. Exit velocity is at the pilot's discretion provided it is within the engine's maximum speed and cannot be a full stop.

Now the important part: shooting at people.

Your ships have weapons. Some of these will fire automatically for you. All others require your instruction to do so. You can order one type of weapon to fire at a time, and order as many shots as the weapon is rated for as long as you have the ammo to do so. Shooting is an aggregate process; your vessel can continue shooting weapons from the previous round while adding on another in the next. Weapons can also be primed, readied for combat without being actually fired. Flying around with primed weapons, however, means bleeding energy into them. Every 10SS moved with a primed weapon bleeds 1 ammo from it. Prime all your weapons, and you may find yourself running dry when you meet your foe.

Reading a ship stat block
Spoiler
HP is the structure of your ship. It doesn't come back, and isn't damaged until your shields are depleted.
Shields absorb damage. They regenerate with movement.
Comm is your communications radius. You can hail other vessels within this radius.
Max Speed is expressed in space sectors. Unless otherwise indicated, you can only move in a straight line.

How to read weapons listings
Spoiler
Damage is the damage in hit points that this weapon can do to a vessel per shot.
Accuracy represents the basic chance to hit an enemy.
Shield Conversion Ratio is the shield percentage drained per point of damage this weapon would deal when impacting a shielded vessel.
Shots is the number of shots that may be fired at once with the weapon. A marking of (auto) indicates that this weapon will fire concurrently with any other weapon you select if there is a foe in its range.
Range is the range in space sectors that this weapon can reach. Reduce by 1 for all diagonal counts.
Stock is the ammunition supplied with this weapon on purchase. Ammo may be hard to come by in space, so spend wisely!

Weapon listings are ordered [Damage|Accuracy%|SCR%|Shots|Range|Stock]
For the Alliance, returning the Battle Frigate Freya to home base is a victory. For the enemy forces of the Corsair, the T'Resh and the Praxan Empire, destroying the Freya is victory. The alien races may choose to consider the kill to be a personal victory, rather than a collective win for all three factions... if so, it's entirely up to you, the players.

When the captain of the Battle Frigate signals his readiness, we shall begin! Good luck, space monkeys!

I sent Fro my completed ship. I should be ready as soon as he approves it, but I think we could do to wait for some more players if anyone else wants to jump on before we start. Otherwise, I'll probably signal ready to start sometime tomorrow.

The Battle Frigate Freya clears the line of attacking vessels assaulting the secret space station where it was built and moves to a point 10SS away. Its captain has a vague idea of how to get home, but must contend with deadly threats from the various alien factions that wish to see it destroyed.

The Freya's sensors record nothing within their radius except the vastness of space. Its captain has a long and dangerous journey ahead.

A grizzled veteran of many a long war in the stars stomps onto the deck. "Status Report!" The nearby intelligence officer turns to the captain and recites concisely, "We're running at full capacity captain. We managed a clean escape. There are bugs in our system though and the enemy will be aware of our telemetry and movements. I have implemented countermeasures but it doesn't look like we'll be able to dislodge them from the network. We do have the telemetry in movements of all enemy and allied ships though." The captain walks over to the captain's seat and sits down before responding, "Bah! We'll have to make a run for home as quickly as possible then. Warm the Hyperdrive and go dark. We're getting out of here, but we're not out yet."

Turn 1
Stealth up. I'll hyperdrive south 5 space sectors, exit velocity warp 3 headed south as well.

An oozing blotch of mass is jettisoned from a planet coated in reddish organic material, orbiting a dim brown dwarf star. Minuscule shreds of skin-like covering are torn off by its speed, revealing its bio-mechanical surface, sleek with barbs of bone and intertwining cords and blood vessels alike - with threadlike sensory organs on the exterior trailing in space, picking up signals beyond human senses. It's shape is like that of a nail - sickened sinews angled down into a point at its bow, while tendrils spewing strange exhaust bellow at its ends.

Deployed one T'Resh Stuntfighter from a T'Resh controlled system.

A lone Roach pilot sputters out of unconsciousness, shouting about where his enemies came from as he spirals into the void. His craft is a miniscule thing shaped vaguely like its namesake insect, a fighter of hullmetal gray sloppily painted with various obscene decals. Tiny or not, the fighter's engines do the trick, and the pilot pulls his tiny ship to a halt, wondering where the hell he is. He sends out a lone communique out in the direction of the Corsair flotilla before diverting all power to sensors.

Far away, the Faceless Pirate switches tabs from his pornography to stare at the first post on coreChan's newest thread: "Yo dawg, I heard you like some Freya in your fleet but the ship got away and I need backup." He types "wut" in reply, and the moment he does the fleet begins to move.

Making an Intelligence check.
