The problem with the mechanism is the same though, tight controls over damage outputs are necessary, or the save formula rapidly breaks down, doubled damage does MUCH more than halve the odds of surviving. Makes you sorta understand why 4e went the way it did, numbers go out of control so easily that locking it into a limited degree of deviation is a powerful factor for game balance.
