Free Boards
« on: January 17, 2013, 01:01:57 PM »
Anyone willing to share advice on forum hosts that are both free, easy to set up, etc?  I'm thinking of making my own as a permanent backup for my material.  And for anyone else's if they wish.

I would suggest looking into a blog rather than a forum for that purpose, they are much easier to get your hands on (for free at least).

Ooooooh...

I wonder if "Uncle Kitties Porn Hut" is an acceptable name...

Despite it not having porn...

Are you referring to structure/organization?

You won't have much control over security w/ those free forum hosting services. Now depending on the host (I don't know of any good ones, but there may be some), certain steps can be taken in setting it up to prevent spambots and to facilitate back-up of the forum on a regular basis.

As for the forum's layout, look around at similar forums and remember your old forum's layout. Any subject that would potentially get lots of posts should have its own section, and they can be grouped hierarchically w/o too much thought.

I will note that many of these free forum hosters become very slow w/ even a moderate level of activity.
Can you contact the owner of BG/MinMax? Could you not use their account w/ the host to set up a new forum under a different domain?

I can contact them, but I'd rather wait until they aren't fighting to save their own sites to do so. Was investigating other options in the meantime.

What about a Wiki?  That way you could have groupings and links and categories (so better than a blog), and the Discussion threads help for, y'know, discussing things.  You could make it so that only members can edit things, so you don't have random people wandering by and changing your stuff.  It's probably possible to restrict who can be a member, too.

The above site does something like what you're proposing, sirpercival.

Yeah, but that site is beyond awful.
Legend contributions: As Above, So Below (rewrite); Reap the Whirlwind, A Personal Touch, Kept Secret, Kept Safe (Professional Soldier); Combat Alchemist (extra track)

Because of the way they put it together.

Any disadvantages to doing it as a wiki?
